African American Farmers Looking for Settlement Money in Racial Bias Case

U.S. Agriculture Department was found guilty of a long existing pattern of discrimination against African American farmers when applying for farm loans and other federal programs. Qualified farmers could each receive $50,000 settlements. Advocates want congress to speed up the process. Gary Grant of the Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association said,

“We spend a billion dollars on a jet to go bomb somebody. We’re talking about a billion dollars to help feed our country, and I just don’t see why Congress and the president can’t go ahead and find [the funds]. It is an emergency.”

Ralph Paige, executive director of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund, said he believes they are close to finding a way to settle with the 80,000 African American farmers involved in the suit.
