New Treatment for Diabetic Eye Disease

Over 30 million African Americans have diabetes. Diabetic African Americans are more likely to develop complications and disabilities associated with the complications from diabetes.

Retinopathy is a common complication affecting the eye. Uncontrolled diabetes can cause swelling and leaking of tiny blood vessels in the retina of eyes. This is called retinopathy and can lead to blindness.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) often accompanies retinopathy. If the fluid the fluid from retinopathy leaks into the center of the macula, the part of the eye that provides straight-ahead vision, it causes swelling and burry vision. This is called DME.

There is a new treatment for diabetic macular edema. Study results show this new treatment to work for most people experiencing some vision loss.
