Cop Punches Teenage Girl in the Face

Commentary –

A cop punches a 17 year-old teenage girl in the face in Seattle, Washington. The incidence occurred following a jay-walking violation. Most of the incidence was caught on tape.

The video shows the officer struggling with a young women,  age 19. You can hear her cry out for help. Her 17 year-old friend removed the officer’s hands and pushed him. That’s when the officer directs his attention to the 17 year-old and punches her in the face. You can hear the shock of the crowd.

It is no question that the girls were wrong for resisting. The question is, was the officer’s response appropriate? Does a push deserve a punch? Was the girls’ resistance threatening to the officer? Or was this abuse? Was this police brutality?

After listening to several reporters’ description of the instance, it was clear that early reports by a large percentage of the media,  presented the story as a case of “unruly actions of women” and a trained response by the officer.

After the community stepped forward to protest the officer’s actions, the focus changed. Then, we hear of reports of an earlier instance of police brutality  that is still being investigated by the same police department.

Ask yourself, if this was not a “trained police officer”, and a young woman was pulling away from a man, then  another young girl intervenes and pushes him; would he be justified in punching her?  I do not think so. If he is “trained”, he should be able to see that they did not represent a threat to him. Neither of the girls were hitting him, neither girl had a weapon. It seemed more of a retaliation on the officer’s part. It was police brutality and abuse.

What do you think?
