African Migration to Europe

Many Africans have migrated to Europe due to economic and security duress within their home borders. Much of this has been the result of colonialism and a fight for power. Often families are caught within walls of political turmoil and become victims of violence, rape, poor health, and starvation.

Survival hinges on few options. Each year thousands become part of the displaced. Conflict victims become part of the African Diaspora. After being swept out of their homes, many find themselves further victims of violence and rape within refugee camps.  Refugee camps in neighboring countries overflow with residents contributing to the need for the movement to continue. So, periling the risks of crossing seas and deserts, you follow the exodus.  Other risks within the journey include inhumane actions of smugglers and the possibility of being sent home.

Routes to Europe

Migrants’ main departure points to reach Europe are:

  • West coast of Africa to the Canary Islands

Migrants from Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Senegal, The Gambia, Mauritania and Western Sahara travel to northern coast of Morocco.

  • Western Sahara to the Canary Islands

Migrants from Ivory Coast, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin travel to Mali, Mauritania, and southern Morocco to Western Sahara.

  • Central Sahara to the Canary Islands, Spain, and Italy

Migrants from Niger and south of Niger, travel to northern Mauritania, Western Sahara or southern Morocco.

  • Northern Morocco across deserts to the straits of Spain

Migrants travel from Sudan, Somalia, and Ethiopia travel to Libya.

  • Eastern Sahara

Migrants from Sub-Sahara Africa travel to Tunisia and Libya across seas to islands in Italy.

Spain is the closest European soil to Africa. Migrants will travel to Spain, Canary Islands, or Italy; then continue to other European countries.
