African Descent Tribes Living in India

Africans have migrated to India since medieval times. These tribes are called Siddi; which is sometimes spelled Sidi or Sidhi, and Habsi; sometimes spelled Habshi. Europeans also brought Africans to India as:

  • Laborers
  • Soldiers
  • Special servants
  • Herbalists and Midwives

Some tribes traveled to India with Arab merchants.

African tribes came to India from:

  • Ethiopia
  • Sudan
  • Mozambique
  • South Africa
  • Kenya
  • Tanzania

Siddis and Habsis have settled into Indian culture. They have settled into different regions of India. Marital, religious, and language depends greatly on the region in which they settled.  Habsis were often brought as soldiers; Siddis were often brought as servants.

Today, a significant number of these tribes live in poverty as farmers or unskilled workers. In some regions Siddis are doctors, lawyers, businessmen, journalists, teachers, and land owners.

Notice instruments that are used by the African Diaspora in Brazil.
